A different take on New Year’s Resolutions

A different take on New Year’s Resolutions

Happy New Year!

It’s hard to believe that the holiday season is already over...and that 2024 is officially under way. I’m sure you’ve seen tons of posts online about New Year’s resolutions. Things like, “buy this to lose those 20 pounds in January!” or “buy my course and learn how to be a marketing rockstar this year!”

It’s inevitable. January brings with it a whole lot of new “marketing opportunities” particularly for those in the weight loss and fitness industry. If you’re like me, you probably don’t pay any attention (and may I say, good for you).

This year though, it appears that a lot of people are getting tired of being told they need to do better, be better and just generally “be the best they can be” come January 1. I’m seeing a lot of “saying no” to resolutions. To let go of the expectations with the follow-up guilt. To simply just go on starting the new year.

To be honest, it’s a nice change. However, I personally do have a resolution for 2024. It’s just a different type of resolution. And here it is:

This year when it comes to the people in my life, my resolution is to CELEBRATE. Celebrate as often as possible. Celebrate with friends and relatives.

This is how it came about:

Sometime last summer, my dad grumbled: “So I see you ladies are heading out again. Another get-together? Are you celebrating something AGAIN????”

To which my mother, sister and I replied:

  • “That’s right. We’re celebrating X getting a new puppy.”
  • Or, “Yup, we’re celebrating Y becoming a grandmother.”
  • And “yes! we’re celebrating Z getting that raise and a promotion.”

Over the past year I’ve realized that it’s high time we celebrated a little more. That we spent time with friends enjoying life and all its rewards. Being together. Because when you get to be my age, you know time is marching on. And you realize that it’s about the people and the little things in life.

So today, as the year starts ramping up, I’d like to encourage you to celebrate. In whatever form it may be.

  • Your son finally got a job and moved out? Cheers to that!
  • Your daughter just got engaged! Outstanding!
  • You’ve decided that December 31 will be your retirement date? Magnificent!

Take the time to sit back and bask in the glory of the little things. Because unless you celebrate, time simply marches on and you do the same thing over and over....without relishing and enjoying all the magical and beautiful things life puts in front of you.
